THERE’S no doubting Thomas when it comes to the big occasions!

Wrexham AAC’s Thomas Walley claimed a third-placed finish in the senior men’s pole vault at the UK indoor championships in Birmingham.

Walley picked an opportune time to produce a season’s best - and an indoor personal best - of 5.16-metres to claim the bronze medal.

The Wrexham good news stories just continued on the same day.

Brecon staged the Welsh cross-country championship and Matt Willis won the senior men’s title in a time of 29.48. In 89th spot was Ally Hughes (37.43), while Evie Hughes (19.16) was 29th in the U15 girls’ race and Bethan Roberts (13.37) took 16th spot in the U13 girls’ event. Clubmate Grace Hughes (14.21) was 25th, while George Hughes (6.19) crossed the line 12th in the year four boys’ event.

Oliver Edwards competed at the Manchester indoor open, where he clocked 7.49 for the 60-metres and 23.79 for the 200-metres.

There were a trio of triumphs from Amanda Cook at the British masters indoor championships in Lee Valley.

In the W45 class, she came first in the triple jump (9.17m), long jump (4.25m) and 60-metre hurdles (10.56).

Amanda Broadhurst was victorious in the W50 triple jump (8.52m), while she took third in the 60-metre hurdles (10.92) and seventh in the200-metres (32.04). Meanwhile, Neil Davies’ time of 61.44 saw him cross the line fifth in the M55 400-metres.

There was a strong home representation at the Village Bakery half-marathon in Wrexham. Two Wrexham AAC racers finished in the top-20, spearheaded by 12th-placed Ben Goodfellow (69.32) and Ryan Davis (16th in 70.14).

They were followed by Luke Northall (76th in 75.55), Thomas Spence (174th in 79.52), Andrew Jones (235th in 83.01), Gareth Chaloner (245th in 83.30), Ally Hughes (290th in 85.06), Ian James (383rd in 88.34), Robert Miles (403rd in 89.21), Tony Forster (479th in 92.05) and Glyn Wise (490th in 92.58).

Other Wrexham racers at the popular event were David Millington (612th in 97.50), Deb Pugh (980th in 114.08), Ian Grimshaw (1,006th in 115.02), Sarah Grimshaw (1,125th in 120.27), David Gallagher (1,156th in 122.58) and Charles Ashley (1,344th in 147.41).

Buckley Runners’ Jack Bromley was eighth in a fabulous time of 1-09.14, with first MV45 Chris Callaghan claiming 21st in a time of 1-11.19.

They were followed by Chris Myles (53rd in 1-14.38), Ricky Challinor (58th in 1-14.47), David White (78th in 1-15.53), Liam Rogan (171st in 1-19.50), Anthony Davidson (180th in 1-20.22), Jez Brown (214th in 1-22:23) and Simon Mara (215th in 1-22.23).

First at the Ruthin 5k was Wrexham’s Connor Rogers, who clocked 16.06 for victory, ahead of clubmates Richard Westwood (sixth in 21.03), Mark Hughes (11th in 25.40), Alex Edwards (29th in 30.50) and Alyson Winn (43rd in 38.21).

Deestrider Jess McKinlay was the third lady at the Ruthin 10k in 48.59, while clubmate Christine Cammillare and Ben the collie came second in Cammillare’s age category on both Saturday and Sunday at the Delamere canicross event.

A magnificent seven Deestriders took part at the sold-out Parbold Hill race in Lancashire, covering 11km of multi-terrain miles of mostly mud.

Wrexham’s Mike Robbins (24.01) took ninth spot at the most recent Wepre parkrun, while John Atkinson (21.06) was 17th at Medway.

Connor Rogers (22nd in 21.52) and Mark Hughes (168th in 29.02) tackled the Ormskirk event, while Glyn Wise (19.36) was fourth at Bala. In Llangollen, Charles Ashley clocked 29.41 for 71st and Stephen Walker was 115th in 48.33.

Alan Williams (42nd in 26.59) was the leading Wrexham racer at Erddig, followed by Peter Sussex (48th in 27.23) while Ellis Jones (9.53) was third at the Alyn Waters junior parkrun.
