FORMER Wrexham utility player Liam McAlinden has signed for National League North high-fliers Scunthorpe United on a short-term contract until the end of the season.

The vastly experienced McAlinden became a free agent after he left The Racecourse by mutual consent on transfer deadline day.

The 30-year-old, who has played wing-back and in midfield, became Phil Parkinson's first signing when he joined the Reds in July 2021.

He made 64 appearances in total during his time in north Wales, scoring once.

Despite helping Wrexham clinch the National League title following a record-breaking 2022-23 campaign when he made 11 appearances, McAlinden only played six games in all competitions this season with only two of those coming in League Two.

Prior to signing for Wrexham, McAlinden helped Morecambe clinch promotion to League One via the play-offs and he also played for the likes of Shrewsbury, Fleetwood, Exeter and Halifax Town.
