JACK MARRIOTT says the result was all that matters after Wrexham ground out a 2-1 win against Sutton United to end the barren run.

Phil Parkinson's side made the trip to Gander Green Lane on the back of four successive defeats, with three coming in League Two, but the Reds secured a welcome victory to get the promotion push back on track.

Will Boyle gave Wrexham the lead on the stroke of half-time and although second bottom Sutton equalised after the break, leading scorer Elliot Lee bagged his 14th goal of the season five minutes from time.

Sutton were a real threat but Marriott was pleased with how the players rose to the challenge.

"You have got to come to these places and grind out results, and we did that," said Marriott, a transfer deadline day signing from Fleetwood who made his full debut.

"We showed a real desire and a real grit in our performance to get over the line.

"We defended really well and got the goal at the end of the first half.

"Sutton equalised and heads could have dropped but it's not that type of dressing room.

"The desire and character in the squad is there for all to see and you saw that in our performance.

"Thankfully we have gone on and won the game, it was a great finish by Elliot."

Wrexham, up to fourth in the table and six points behind leaders Stockport County with a game in hand, will aim to build on the win at home to Notts County on Saturday.

"It was all about the result and we got that," added Marriott.

"It is all about bouncing back from defeats and now we move on to Notts County.

"We are back on track and hopefully we carry it on this Saturday.

"Notts County are a good team, they will want to turn us over on our own patch and we can't allow that."
