WREXHAM are now turning their attention to the fourth round of the FA Cup after Sunday's win at Shrewsbury Town.

Reds fans will be dreaming of a top draw tonight and making it further than they did last season.

The two ties against Sheffield United last year took the Reds’ post-war tally of last 32 matches to 22.

And remarkably club legend Gareth Davies played in half of them, including the 3-1 defeat at Liverpool in 1970 where Ray Smith stunned the majority of the 54,096 Anfield crowd by heading Wrexham into the lead.

Davies was reliving the glory days as Wrexham players Luke McNicholas and Liam Hall visited Hillbury House Care Home to collect donations for North Wales Superkids, which were handed over by the former Reds star.

The home has taken care of the former promotion-winning captain for a number of years, and both goalkeepers got to meet him and learn more about the club’s history while collecting the donations.

Davies, who made 612 appearances for Wrexham in a 16-year Racecourse stint, captained the side in the two games against Newcastle in the never-to-be-forgotten 1977/78 season where Wrexham reached the quarter-finals of both the FA Cup and League Cup competitions as well as winning the Division Three title.

Dixie McNeil scored twice in the 2-2 draw at St James’ Park and hit two more in a 4-1 replay win where Bobby Shinton and Les Cartwright also scored.

Davies also led the team out at White Hart Lane 12 months later where Shinton and a double from John Lyons, pictured scoring from the spot above, earned Wrexham a 3-3 draw. Davies joined McNeil on the scoresheet in the Racecourse replay where Spurs sneaked a 3-2 win in extra time.

The replay theme continued against Carlisle in 1980 where another McNeil double and one from Joey Jones sealed a 3-1 home win.

Davies played in both of those games and in the three games against Chelsea in the 1981/82 season. The ties finished 0-0, 1-1 and 2-1 to Chelsea with McNeil and Mick Vinter the Reds scorers.

Wrexham’s first fourth round tie of the post-war era was a record-breaker as 34,445 packed into The Racecourse on January 26, 1957 to see Matt Busby’s Manchester United triumph 5-0.

The Reds were beaten 3-0 at Aston Villa in 1961 but the long wait for a fourth round win ended in 1974 after Dave Smallman scored the only goal to see off Middlesbrough at The Racecourse as John Neal’s side were eventually knocked out in the quarter-finals at Burnley.

The other fourth round wins came against Wimbledon in 1981 where Steve Fox and FA Cup specialist McNeil got the goals and in 1997 when Brian Flynn’s side made it through to the last eight.

After knocking out West Ham in a third round replay win at West Ham, the Reds triumphed 4-2 at Peterborough in the fourth round thanks to Kevin Russell’s double and one each from Steve Watkin and Peter Ward.

Last season was the first time Wrexham had reached the fourth round in the 21st century.

James Jones, Tom O’Connor and Paul Mullin scored in a 3-3 thriller against Sheffield United at The Racecourse with Mullin also scoring in the 3-1 replay defeat at Bra mall Lane.

Replay exits came in 1992 and 1999 against West Ham and Huddersfield respectively.

The Hammers won 1-0 at The Racecourse after Waynne Phillips and Lee Jones had netted in a 2-2 draw in London’s East End.

Karl Connolly netted Wrexham’s goal in the 1-1 home draw with Huddersfield and Russell’s goal was not enough in a 2-1 replay defeat.

In 1977, Billy Ashcroft and Graham Whittle scored at Ninian Park where Cardiff City sneaked a last-minute winner to triumph 3-2.

Eighteen years later, Kieron Durkan silenced Old Trafford by putting the Reds ahead against Manchester United. But Sir Alex Ferguson’s side fought back to win 5-2, Jon Cross bagging the Reds’ other goal.
