PHIL PARKINSON wanted his players to make supporters proud again in the FA Cup and Wrexham delivered as they set-up a second round tie at home to National League South leaders Yeovil Town.

There have been no shortage of cup shocks over the years and the Reds reached the fourth round of the competition last season, springing a huge surprise against Championship high-fliers Coventry City before bowing out to Premier League-bound Sheffield United following a hard-fought replay.

Wrexham made the trip to fellow-League Two high-fliers Mansfield Town for Saturday’s first round tie and strike duo Sam Dalby and Paul Mullin struck either side of the break in the 2-1 win.

More than 550 fans made the trip to Field Mill for the evening kick-off, with the game televised live by S4C, and although promotion is the priority Parkinson stressed the importance of his side putting on a show in the cup.

“I said to the lads before the game that we respect the history of Wrexham Football Club in the FA Cup,” said the Reds’ boss. “That is important.

“We have built a great relationship up with the people in Wrexham about the way we have performed and conducted ourselves, and the FA Cup means a lot.

“We have got a great tradition in it and whether we win, lose or draw at Manfield, it was important we put in a performance which our supporters back home watching on TV and the ones who made the long trip could be very proud of and I think we have done that.

“It was a good night for Wrexham Football Club. It was a great opportunity to progress into round two, but also beat one of our rivals at the top end of League Two.

“Mansfield are a good side but so are we and we showed good quality when it mattered most.”

Yeovil, currently top of National League South following last season's relegation from the fifth tier, made it through after beating Gateshead 3-2.

The second round fixtures will be played across December 1, 2 and 3.
