WREXHAM picked up their first away League Two win of the season after beating Tranmere Rovers 1-0 at Prenton Park.

Phil Parkinson's side had drawn both of their other two matches on the road but deserved three points against rivals Tranmere after creating a host of chqnces with Aaron Hayden getting the only goal early in the second half.

It was the second victory in six league outings, with Wrexham losing just once on the opening day to MK Dons, and leaves the Reds with nine points.

Parkinson made four changes from the side that started the Carabao Cup penalty shoot-out defeat against Bradford City in midweek.

James McClean replaced Jacob Mendy in the left wing-back role while Ollie Palmer came into the attack in place of Jake Bickerstaff.

The other two changes were in midfield where Tom O'Connor and Elliot Lee were preferred to James Jones and Andy Cannon.

There was a place on the substitutes bench for midfielder George Evans, one of two new signings who arrived at The STóK Cae Ras before the transfer window slammed shot on Friday night.

Wrexham went straight at Tranmere and McClean's shot in the area was blocked by a defender.

Palmer fired narrowly over the bar and McClean's cross was met by Lee with the ball deflecting off a Tranmere man for one of a number of corners.

With Wrexham piling on the pressure, Ryan Barnett sent in another cross and Lee only just headed over the bar while Palmer jinked his way into the area and the ball broke to Sam Dalby whose effort was turned around the post from point blank by goalkeeper Luke McGee.

There was no let-up from Wrexham who were well on top and Luke Young headed over the bar after McGee punched Ben Tozer's long throw-in clear and a good move ended with McClean's low drive deflected behind for yet another Reds' corner.

McClean went close again after Lee charged upfield and played in the wing-back who brought a fantastic save out of McGee.

Tranmere created a rare opportunity but keeper Mark Howard got down low to deny Kristian Dennis and it remained goalless at the break.

Wrexham picked up where they left off at the start of the second half with McClean's shot deflected wide for a corner which was delivered by O'Connor and Dalby's header fell inches wide.

The Reds had been the better team and deservedly took the lead in the 56th minute.

O'Connor sent in a corner and Hayden rose highest to head home his first goal of the season.

Wrexham continued to press and Dalby fed McClean whose cross back into the danger-zone struck a defender and was claimed by McGee.

Tranmere responded with Sam Taylor's drive turned over the bar by Howard while Wrexham went upfield and Tozer's cross/shot was deflected for a corner.

Young made a last-gasp clearance on the line to deny an equalise and Wrexham celebrated victory.
