Wrexham win shoot-out and are into the second round of the Carabao Cup

The game finished goalless but the Reds were faultless from the spot with Luke Young, Elliot Lee, Tom O'Connor and Sam Dalby all successful from 12 yards.

League One outfit Wigan missed two of their penalties and it was Wrexham who maintained their interest in the competition.

Phil Parkinson's men were given a rude awakening on Saturday as the first game back in the Football League following a 15-year absence ended in a 5-3 defeat at home to MK Dons.

But it was a far better performance against Wigan with a much-changed Wrexham side showing a lot more composure on the ball and giving a superb account of themselves throughout.

Wrexham were solid at the back while the chances kept coming all game at the other end but the Reds just couldn't make the breakthrough despite all their endeavour.

It went to penalties and it was Wrexham who came out on top.

Wrexham's last game in the competition was a 5-0 second round thrashing at the hands of Aston Villa in August 2007 when Shaun Maloney - now in charge of Wigan - scored twice for Martin O'Neill's side but he was on the losing side on this occasion.

Parkinson said he would ring the changes following the weekend defeat to give players much needed game time and the Reds' boss was true to his word.

The starting line-up showed eight changes with only Eoghan O'Connell, Ben Tozer and James Jones keeping their places.

Mark Howard, Anthony Forde, Max Cleworth, Callum McFadzean, Young, Jordan Davies, Ollie Palmer and Jake Bickerstaff come into the side with Ben Foster, Ryan Barnett, O'Connor, Jacob Mendy, Andy Cannon, Lee, Dalby and Billy Waters dropping to the substitutes bench.

With teams allowed to name nine replacements in the competition, there was also a place among the subs for Liam McAlinden.

Palmer earned Wrexham a first minute corner from which the ball dropped to Tozer and his deflected effort was comfortably saved by Sam Tickle.

At the other end, Stephen Humphrys fired into the side-netting but Wrexham continued their good start and Tozer's long throw-in fell to Bickerstaff whose overhead kick landed on the roof of the net.

Howard did well to turn Humphrys' drive over the bar while Davies' free-kick was straight at Tickle for Wrexham who were giving an excellent account of themselves.

Palmer couldn't keep his header down from McFadzean's cross but the Reds came close to taking the lead when Jones' shot was parried by Tickle and Bickerstaff put the rebound over the bar, while more good play ended with Cleworth heading wide from Forde's cross.

It was an entertaining tie with Humphrys low drive well saved by Howard for Wigan and it remained goalless at the break.

Wrexham had the first chance of the second half with Palmer's curling effort falling just wide, and only a brilliant double save by Tickle prevented the Reds going ahead.

The goalkeeper parried Jones' effort from just outside the area and then got up to block Davies' follow-up.

Palmer was not far away with another chance while Bickerstaff fired straight at Tickle.

The game still hung in the balance with Humphrys firing wide for Wigan who also saw a well-placed Charlie Wyke put his header over the bar.

Neither side could find a winner but Wrexham held their nerve from the spot to progress to round two.
