JACOB MENDY will fulfill a dream when he plays in the Football League next season but the wing-back is not content with competing in the fourth tier.

Wrexham clinched the National League title following a record-breaking 2022-23 campaign and will feature in League Two for the first time since 2008.

It will be the highest level that Mendy, who was brought in from Boreham Wood last summer, has played in his career but the 26-year-old is aiming to continue climbing the pyramid with the Reds.

“As a football player, the aim is to play as high as possible,” said Mendy. “Getting promoted was something which was a must for me and we did it.

“Hopefully we can get promoted again.

“One of the reasons why I joined the club was because we have got the same ambition.

“I want to play high and get promoted again with Wrexham; hopefully win the league but at least get promoted next season.

“I am looking forward to it.”

Wrexham were involved in a thrilling title race with Notts County and clinched automatic promotion with a best ever haul of 111 points.

Unlike in non-league’s top-flight, three teams go straight up from League Two as well as another side from the play-offs and Mendy is pleased that the Reds have got an even bigger opportunity to continue rising through the divisions.

“That’s a big difference and that’s where we have got even more chance,” said Mendy.

“It’s not going to be easy but we have definitely got more chance of getting promoted because four teams go up altogether and not two.

“We can come back stronger for next season because our plan is to get promoted next season as well.”

Mendy, competing with Callum McFadzean in the left wing-back role, made 30 league appearances last term and he also weighed in with four goals.

He has vowed to continue playing his part as Wrexham aim to continue the success story in 2023-24.

“As I have always said, I just try and contribute to the team as much as I can,” said Mendy.

“When I am playing, I will try and do it with goals or assists.

“I always try to do my best every time I play.”

The Wrexham players continued the promotion celebrations on an all-expenses-paid lavish bash in Las Vegas, with Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney funding the trip.

Mendy said he had the time of his life in America.

“Las Vegas was nice, it was the best trip of my life,” he added. “A lot of people knew who we were and they received us really well.

“I have got nothing to complain about.”

Mendy received his first international call-up following Wrexham’s promotion season and was an unused substitute as Gambia beat South Sudan 3-2 in Wednesday’s qualifier to keep their Africa Cup of Nations hopes alive.

The top-two in the group will progress to the finals in Ivory Coast and Gambia are second, level on points with leaders Mali who have a game in hand.

Third-placed Congo have also played a game less than Gambia, who have one fixture remaining.
