PHIL PARKINSON will hold talks with Ben Foster over whether the goalkeeper wants to prolong his career before deciding on the next course of action.

The former England international came of retirement in March as a replacement for the injured Rob Lainton and played the final eight games of the National League season, helping Wrexham clinch automatic promotion and return to the Football League following a 15-year absence.

Foster, who had a successful loan spell at The Racecourse in 2005 before going on to play for Manchester United, Watford twice, Birmingham and West Brom, hung his gloves up in September before answering the SOS call and the 40-year-old has admitted he is contemplating continuing his career going into the 2023-24 season.

“You have to contemplate it because to be part of Wrexham is a special thing,” said Foster amid the after-match celebrations of Wrexham being confirmed champions.

“It’s nice to be a man of leisure and freedom and I really enjoyed my retirement. I had a great time for nine months.

“But everybody who plays here can see that Wrexham is a really special club.”

Parkinson has two goalkeepers - Lainton and Mark Howard - under contract for Wrexham's first League Two campaign since 2008, although Rory Watson and Kai Calderbank-Park have been released.

The Reds' boss, who would want a third stopper on the books, is going to speak with Foster to see what the fans' favourite intends to do.

"I wanted to let the euphoria of promotion and the lads' Las Vegas trip go down first," said Parkinson.

"I will sit down with Ben in the next day or two and have a really good chat, and see what his thoughts are.

"We have got some good goalkeepers under contract as well so we will speak with Ben and make a decision which is right for him and right for us going forward."
