PHIL PARKINSON says winning automatic promotion has been a real team effort and he wants everybody connected with the club to celebrate Wrexham's return to the Football League following a 15-year absence.

Saturday's 3-1 victory over Boreham Wood in front of nearly 10,200 supporters at The Racecourse clinched the National League title with one game to go.

Despite going behind after just 45 seconds, Elliot Lee quickly equalised and Paul Mullin's brilliant second half brace, which took the leading scorer onto 47 goals for the season, secured a memorable win.

Parkinson, appointed manager by Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in July 2021, saw Wrexham pipped to the title by Stockport County last season before losing to Grimsby Town in the play-off semi-final.

Despite being pushed all the way by Notts County in a remarkable 2022-23 campaign which has seen both teams pass the 100 points mark, Wrexham came out on top and the Reds' boss says it was special occasion being crowned champions.

"I am immensely proud of the players, staff, all the supporters, everyone who works at the club and the owners because ever since I have been here I have sensed that kind of community togetherness and spirit," said Parkinson.

"That is what you need.

"There has been a real togetherness about everybody connected with the club and it is a very special night for this area and the football club.

"I am absolutely delighted.

"We have been waiting for this moment, I really have been waiting for this game where we said 'win and you are promoted'.

"There was a real focus about the staff and the players leading into this game and we've got the job done.

"I think it is very important that we celebrate and we will.

"You have got to enjoy it and we really will."

When asked about his feelings when the final whistle blew and Wrexham's promotion had been confirmed, Parkinson added: "Those moments can be a bit surreal.

"It is a mixture of emotion and relief as well but just seeing the passion and the happiness on our supporters' faces."

Wrexham broke numerous records this season and victory over the Wood means the Reds have also beaten every single team in the division at least once.

Despite going behind, Parkinson, was confident his players would turn things around.

"It wasn't the best of starts, it certainly dampened the atmosphere slightly," he said.

"But I felt if we kept playing the way I know we can play, we would get chances and you always believed we would take them.

"At half-time I was confident because we have got good players and I felt Boreham Wood would tire, and we would have the quality to go and kill the game off."
