JAMES JONES wants to clinch automatic promotion at The Racecourse and the midfielder is backing the players to rise to the occasion against Boreham Wood tomorrow.

Phil Parkinson’s men beat Yeovil Town 3-0 on Tuesday to move four points ahead of National League title rivals Notts County with two games to go.

Victory at home to The Wood, in front of another sell-out crowd, will secure top spot and a return to the Football League following a 15-year absence.

Wrexham complete the season with a trip to Torquay next weekend but Jones is eager to finish the job off in front of the Reds’ supporters.

“If it doesn’t happen then we have still got another bite of the cherry but everyone wants to do it here,” said Jones.

“It is hard not to get carried away with it, we have just got to keep doing what we have been doing, stay composed and do the business.

“We have got a good group of players who have been outstanding all season and it is important to keep it going.

“We have been in pressure games before and handled big occasions so hopefully we can do it again on Saturday.”

Sixth placed Wood are aiming to cement their place in the play-offs but Jones wants the players to make the most of the opportunity in front of them.

“No-one is under any illusion what we need to do and what we want to do,” said Jones.

“No game in this league is easy but we have given ourselves a fantastic opportunity.

“It is up to us to take it and give the fans what they deserve.”

When asked what winning promotion would mean to him, Jones said: “It would be unbelievable.

“It is massive for us as players but everyone knows what it means to the club, the fans, the place as a whole.

“It is so much more than just winning promotion.

“The fans deserve it and it is down to us to deliver that.”

Wrexham went into Tuesday’s home game against Yeovil knowing victory would give them the opportunity to be crowned champions this weekend.

Following a goalless first half, the Reds stepped up a gear after the break and goals from Anthony Forde, Jones and leading scorer Paul Mullin secured three points, with Yeovil relegated following the defeat.

Jones says there was no panic after failing to make the breakthrough in the opening period.

“We kept our composure, we didn’t get drawn into the occasion of it,” said Jones.

“The gaffer said be patient, keep doing what we are doing and the chances will come, and they did.

“We took the chances and it ended up a convincing win, and a professional performance.

“One down and one to go.

“We have set up what will hopefully be a momentous day.”

Jones scored his fifth goal of the season in the win and he added: “Three points is the main thing but a goal is always nice.

“It is always special scoring here in front of the Wrexham fans.”
