PHIL PARKINSON knew Wrexham would get the win they wanted if they were patient against Yeovil Town at The Racecourse and he praised his players for sticking to their task.

The Reds went into the clash needing six points from the final three games to clinch the National League title.

It remained goalless at the break but with so much at stake, Parkinson didn’t want his side to panic and it paid off in the second half as goals from Anthony Forde, James Jones and Paul Mullin secured a 3-0 victory.

Yeovil were relegated following the defeat and although the Glovers made it tough for the Reds in the first half, Parkinson knew his players would come good.

“It was never going to be straight-forward,” said Parkinson. “Yeovil have got pride to play for as well the hope of staying in the division.

“They have got a good manager and he set them up to be difficult.

“We knew we would have to be patient and in the end we just wore them down.

“I am very pleased with the performance, the lads stuck to the task. We knew what we had to do.

“We couldn’t quite achieve it in the first period, some of the final passing wasn’t quite the standard it normally is but you felt it was coming and I am just pleased with the way we went about our business.

“We stayed calm and got the job done. It is another step in the right direction.”

Forde made his first start since the end of February, returning to the side after dealing with personal problems, and he broke the deadlock on the hour mark.

Parkinson praised Forde for his professionalism during a difficult period and revealed the players applauded the wing-back in the dressing room after the final whistle.

“Anthony’s performance was exceptional,” said Parkinson.

“He hasn’t played for a long time, he has had personal problems.

“When we beat Notts County, I came in the next day and he was working on the pitch with the fitness guys on his own, preparing himself in case this opportunity arose.

“That is the sign of a real true professional, and that was a special moment when he scored and also to last 90 minutes having not played for so long.

“I am just so pleased for Anthony and the lads gave him a round of applause in the dressing room which is a mark of the respect he is held in there."

Midfielder Jones and leading scorer Mullin, with his 45th goal of a stunning season, wrapped up victory and Wrexham will clinch automatic promotion with another home win against Boreham Wood on Saturday.

Wrexham then have a final-day trip to Torquay to complete the season and although delighted to be on the verge of a return to the Football League following a 15-year absence, Parkinson knows there is still work to be done.

“I am pleased with the win and the season to date,” he added.

“We have got ourselves in a strong position with two games to go.

“We have got to be nice and cool, calm and collected , and concentrate on performing at our very best in the last two games of the season.”
