WREXHAM beat Oldham Athletic 5-1 at The Racecourse to return to the top of the National League and reach the 100 points mark.

Phil Parkinson's men have set a new club points record and are now three points ahead of Notts County, who didn't play, and also have a game in hand.

The Reds, who have six matches remaining in the race for the title and are unbeaten in 28 league outings, were on top from the start against Oldham and thoroughly deserved the win.

It was one-way traffic in the first half and Wrexham led 2-0 through Eughan O'Connell and leading scorer Paul Mullin.

Although they totally dominated and should have been further ahead, the Reds conceded a goal in stoppage time as Oldham netted against the run of play.

That goal gave the Latics hope but Elliot Lee made it 3-1 five minutes into the second half and as the chances kept coming, Mullin got his second and third of the afternoon to notch his hat-trick and move onto 43 goals for the season.

Wrexham continue the automatic promotion challenge at Halifax on Friday.

Parkinson made one change from the side that started the 3-0 home win against York City the previous weekend.

Sam Dalby, who came off the bench and scored the second goal in the victory, replaced Ollie Palmer in attack.

Palmer was named on the substitutes bench where there was also a place for midfielder Tom O'Connor who was available again after recovering from a hamstring injury.

Wrexham came close to taking the lead in the second minute when Lee's free-kick was nodded back into the danger-zone by James Jones and O'Connell's header was cleared off the line by a defender.

The Reds felt the ball had crossed the line and the home side thought they'd gone ahead when a cross was spilled by Oldham keeper Matthew Hudson and Mullin slotted home but the goal was strangely disallowed for a foul.

It was all Wrexham who were well on top and Lee's shot was deflected wide for a corner which the playmaker took and Ben Tozer's header was brilliantly palmed away by Hudson.

Oldham were being put under pressure and it finally told as Wrexham took a 24th minute lead.

Mullin's free-kick came back off the crossbar and O'Connell headed the rebound into the back of net.

It got even better as Wrexham made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute.

Lee delivered a free-kick from the left and an unmarked Mullin scored with a header.

The chances kept coming and Lee fired over following a good move, with Ryan Barnett making inroads down the right, and Dalby was unable to hit the target after getting on the end of Lee's corner.

However, Oldham pulled a goal back in added time.

Former Wrexham midfielder John Rooney sent in a free-kick and Liam Hogan headed past Ben Foster.

But the Reds made it 3-1 on 50 minutes following neat build-up play.

Lee was allowed to carry the ball and he scored with a superb strike that found the top corner from 20 yards.

Wrexham kept pressing and Lee's corner to the back post was headed over by Mullin while Dalby wriggled free from his marker and saw his effort parried by Hudson and Barnett's follow-up went wide.

There were more chances to increase the lead as the Reds continued to push Oldham under the cosh.

Mullin latched onto Dalby's flick-on and rounded Hudson, although his shot was blocked, but the striker scored Wrexham's fourth goal in the 70th minute.

A lovely passing move ended with Barnett sending in a cross and Mullin beat Hudson with his header.

There was no let-up from Wrexham and Mullin's shot was parried by Hudson and the striker only just cleared the bar with another effort.

Ex-Wrexham striker Mike Fondop was sent-off for elbowing O'Connell to heap more misery on mid-table Oldham who saw substitute Jordan Davies' shot deflect off a defender and only just clear the bar.

But Mullin made it 5-1 when he netted with a brilliant shot from just outside the area to complete his hat-trick and Oldham were well beaten.
