EVERYBODY wants to play their part in the automatic promotion push but manager Phil Parkinson has praised players for not letting frustrations get the better of them if they aren’t in the side.

Parkinson has compiled a squad that is challenging for the National League title with Notts County and there is huge competition for a starting place.

Such is the strength in depth in the Wrexham ranks, players such as captain Luke Young and new signing Billy Waters weren’t even included on the substitutes bench for Saturday’s 3-0 home win against York City and missed out completely.

But with players pushing each other to make the starting XI, Parkinson feels that is bringing the best out in the Reds who are unbeaten in 27 league matches and he says the team is more important than individuals.

“There is good competition for places and that is reflected in the performance,” said Parkinson, who has seen Notts County take over as leaders on goal difference after winning 2-0 at Altrincham on Tuesday, although Wrexham have two games in hand.

“Elliot Lee got a goal at the weekend, Jordan Davies was unlucky not to keep his place but Elliot played with an understanding of that; he knows he has got to play well because he has got good players behind him.

“It is the same for James Jones, the same for players all across the team.

“Everybody is keen to be involved in every game which is great.

“But there is also an understanding that the team and the mindset of the squad is more important than any individual, and I feel we have got that.

“If you look at Mark Howard and Rory Watson, Ben Foster came in but they understand the reasons why we made that decision and we have seen that in other areas.

“Players have found themselves out of the team but it is making sure you don’t take that disappointment with you on the training pitch and you don’t let it affect the group, and I have got to say that I never seen that once all season.”
