BEN TOZER has welcomed having a free midweek to recharge the batteries but the centre-back still expects training to be intense this week as players battle to be part of Wrexham's title challenge.

The Reds have played on six of the last seven Tuesday nights and also had weekend matches during a punishing schedule but Phil Parkinson's men aren't in action until Saturday when they face Bromley at Hayes Lane.

Leaders Wrexham beat Southend United 1-0 on Saturday to remain four points ahead of Notts County and there are nine games left in the race for the National League title.

Not having a midweek fixture means a welcome breather for Tozer and his team-mates until resuming the automatic promotion challenge against the Ravens but you won't find the influential defender losing focus with places in the starting XI up for grabs at such a vital stage in the season.

"You don't want to switch off," he said.

"It is important not to relax too much mentally; you do need the physical rest but you also need to stay focussed and tuned in on what's to come.

"Hopefully we will be bang at it in training and everyone will be fighting for their positions for Saturday."

On the gruelling schedule, Tozer added: "It has been tough and it almost reminds me of the Covid year where it felt like it was Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday-Tuesday- Saturday-Tuesday.

"It is quite good in a way where you get in that mindset where you are digging in every Saturday and Tuesday but at the same time, you don't want to use it as an excuse because you are tired.

"Everyone is tired but it is about getting on with it at the end of the day."
