WREXHAM are back where they want to be going into the final two months of the season.

Phil Parkinson's side produced a superb performance as they beat Chesterfield 2-1 to return to the top of the National League on a big night in the race for the title.

Victory, courtesy of first half goals from Elliot Lee and Sam Dalby which extended the unbeaten league run to 22 matches with Chesterfield scoring a last-gasp consolation, takes Wrexham one point ahead of Notts County and the Reds also have a game in hand.

It was important to build on a superb Saturday when Wrexham beat Dorking Wanderers 3-1 and closed the gap on County who lost 2-1 against Dagenham and Redbridge.

Chesterfield arrived in north Wales on the crest of a slump, the Spireites winless in eight league matches with just three points to show for their efforts and down to fifth in the standings.

Even though Paul Cook's side's title hopes have all but ended, it was never going to be an easy game with Chesterfield battling to secure a play-off spot but it was a job well done by Wrexham who took the game to their visitors from the first whistle.

Wrexham were also gunning for revenge after going down 2-0 to Chesterfield back in August - one of only two league defeats for Parkinson's men this season - and they heaped more misery on the Spireites.

It was a job well done and the Reds now have 12 games left as they attempt to secure automatic promotion back to the Football League.

Parkinson named the same side that started the weekend home win against Dorking.

There was a change on the substitutes bench with centre-back Eoghan O'Connell, who has been absent with an Achilles' problem, returning in place of midfielder James Jones.

Wrexham were immediately on the front foot when the game kicked-off with Lee firing over from the edge of the box with the first chance of the contest.

But the lively start paid off as the Reds took a fourth minute lead following brilliant inter-play between Lee and Mullin.

Lee fed Mullin who supplied an inch-perfect return pass and the play-maker curled the ball beyond goalkeeper Ross Fitzsimons from just outside the area.

Wrexham continued to press and Luke Young went close with a header while Andy Cannon saw two shots blocked by defenders.

The chances kept coming with Anthony Forde sending in a cross and Lee's header was saved by Fitzsimons.

Mullin had an even better opportunity to make it 2-0 when he raced onto Dalby's brilliant knock-down and was one-on-one with Fitzsimons but the striker was denied by the goalkeeper who made a smart block.

But Chesterfield had a good opening to get back on level terms when Darren Oldaker was allowed to run unchallenged and found Ryan Colclough whose low cross into the danger-zone just needed a touch but Jordan Tunnicliffe did well to prevent Paul McCallum from scoring.

There was another let-off for Wrexham when McCallum somehow failed to convert Colclough's ball into the six-yard box and a glorious chance to equalise went begging.

That proved costly for the visitors as the Wrexham doubled their lead in the first minute of injury time.

It was almost a carbon-copy of his goal against Dorking as Dalby again progressed into the area, beat a defender and fired past Fitzsimons for his seventh goal of the season.

Lee dragged his shot wide at the start of the second half after Chesterfield struggled to deal with Ben Tozer's throw-in.

Wrexham kept the pressure on with Forde picking out Dalby whose effort was straight at Fitzsimons, and the goalkeeper also spilled Forde's drive but it didn't prove costly.

Rob Lainton comfortably gathered Liam Mandeville's drive at the other end but the Wrexham goalkeeper then made a fantastic save, getting down low to turn Colclough's header onto the bar.

Wrexham responded with Cannon winning the ball in his own half, skipping past a player and embarking on a fine run before feeding Mullin who failed to hit the target.

Lee clipped the top of the bar in stoppage time and although Colclough reduced the deficit with a last-gasp goal, it was only a consolation as Wrexham took over as leaders.
