PHIL PARKINSON hailed the way his side have responded to high-profile FA Cup games after registering another win in the push for the National League title.

Wrexham exited the cup when they lost 3-1 at Championship high-fliers Sheffield United in Tuesday's fourth round replay, with the Blades scoring twice in added time to finally see off the plucky Reds.

United netted a late equaliser to draw 3-3 in the first meeting between the sides with Wrexham causing a huge upset in the previous round when they won 4-3 at Coventry City, another second tier outfit.

The Reds made it a hat-trick of wins following those three big cup matches by beating Wealdstone 3-1 on Saturday and Parkinson applauded the players for focusing on the job in hand.

"It is always difficult after a high-profile cup game like we had on Tuesday for a number of factors," said Parkinson. "The adrenalin, the emotion and the physical demands on the team.

"Wealdstone are a good side, they are up and around it, they are fresh which can make a difference but I thought the lads were great.

"First half we tried to implement what we set-out to do but were a little bit frantic in our decision making.

"But second half we were superb and it is an important win.

"If you look at the three games - Bromley, Altrincham and Wealdstone - after those high-profile cup games, we have got nine points and that is enormous credit to the players."

Wrexham struggled to break down play-off contenders Wealdstone in the opening half-hour but top scorer Paul Mullin broke the deadlock in the 40th minute, netting his 30th goal of the season.

Although the Stones equalised early in the second half, substitute Jacob Mendy restored the Reds' lead and Sam Dalby - another replacement - made sure of the points late-on.

Wing-back Mendy, who started the cup defeat against the Blades after returning from a hamstring injury, came on at half-time for Callum McFadzean while Dalby netted almost immediately after replacing Mullin.

"I am pleased for Jacob," said Parkinson.

"There was no way I was going to start him because he is on his way back from an injury but unfortunately Callum's groin was sore at half-time and we had to bring him off.

"Forty-five minutes for Jacob is a good progression for him on his return and it was a fantastic goal.

"We brought Sam off on Tuesday because he had a bit of tightness in his hamstring but he passed his fitness test and a great contribution just to seal the deal.

"It just killed the game off for us."

Parkinson made a double substitution for the start of the second half with Max Cleworth also coming on alongside Mendy.

Cleworth replaced Tom O'Connor who had a niggle but Parkinson doesn't think it is serious.

"Tom had a bit of a tight hamstring," said the Reds' boss.

"I don't think it was serious but there's no need to take risks.

"I think that is key.

"We have got good players, Max has come on second half and done great so we had no need to take a risk with those two."
