EOGHAN O’CONNELL enjoyed a dream debut and the centre-back is looking to build on it when Wrexham return to National League action at home to Wealdstone tomorrow.

New signing O’Connell, brought in from Charlton Athletic, scored the winning goal as Phil Parkinson’s side beat Altrincham 2-1 on Saturday to pick up another victory in the race for the title.

“There is no better feeling in football than scoring a goal, especially when it is the winner late on in the game,” said O’Connell, who was not eligible for Tuesday's FA Cup fourth round replay defeat at Sheffield United because he was not registered for the first game.

“A brilliant start for me.

“The lads have made me feel really welcome so I am just looking forward to kicking on now, getting really settled and taking it from there.”

O’Connell has already see the never-say-die attitude in the ranks.

Wrexham were far from their best in the first half but improved after the break and although Ollie Palmer’s opener was cancelled out, the Reds kept pressing and got the winner.

“It was a bit of a disjointed game in the first half,” said the Irish defender. “But it was still 0-0 and all to play for.

“We came out in the second half and we were a lot better.

“I have only just come here but you can tell from the players we have got in the dressing room and the belief all the lads have that the game is never over, no matter what the score is.

“It was not ideal when Altrincham scored but I think we knew we would get another chance. Luckily it fell to me and I was able to finish it.”

Winning is all that matters to O’Connell as second placed Wrexham, three points behind Notts County with two games in hand, aim to come out on top in the race for automatic promotion.

“We are coming to the business end of the season so it is all about results,” he added.

“It does not really matter how good you play at this stage.

"We were just happy to leave Altrincham with the points which is the most important thing.”
