TOM O’CONNOR says the elective atmosphere during the FA Cup fourth round tie against Sheffield United was the best he has witnessed at The Racecourse.

Nearly 10,000 supporters saw Wrexham come from behind to lead 2-1 and 3-2 but the Championship high-fliers snatched a stoppage time equaliser to draw 3-3 and force a replay.

Midfielder O’Connor, who joined the Reds from Burton Albion last January, enjoyed the occasion at the north Wales stadium, with the game also being shown live on BBC One.

He said: “It is the best atmosphere I have seen at The Racecourse since I have been here.

“A few games at the back end of last season came close to it but it was unreal and the best I have played in here.”

Wrexham got off to the worse possible start as the Blades went ahead with just over 60 seconds on the clock while centre-backs Jordan Tunnicliffe and Aaron Hayden went off injured in the opening 10 minutes.

James Jones and O’Connor put Phil Parkinson’s men 2-1 up in the second half and although United levelled, Paul Mullin restored the Reds’ lead with four minutes remaining.

The Blades scored a last-gasp equaliser following a corner but O’Connor was pleased with the way Wrexham responded to the early set-backs.

“I couldn’t think of a worse start with conceding a goal and the two boys going down injured,” said O’Connor.

“But we reshuffled and I think we dealt with it really well.

“We grew into the game and we really showed what we are about in the second half.

“Hopefully the fans are proud of the performance.”

O’Connor admits it felt like a defeat after failing to win the tie.

“The lads were a bit disappointed in the changing room afterwards,” he said.

“I think we thoroughly deserved to win but that’s football.

“It is a bit sickening to concede from a corner at the end but we can take a lot from the game.

“It feels like a defeat. We worked so hard to get back in the lead when they made it 2-2, it was a great goal by Mulls.

“It always feels like a loss when you are ahead and you concede late on.

“It was a great night but it was very close to being a special night.”

O'Connor continued his rich vein of scoring form, netting for the fifth time in nine outings when Luke Young's corner reached him to take his account for the season to seven goals.

"It dropped nicely for me and it was a good feeling to score in front of the fans," he said.

"That is my first goal in front of that end so long may it continue and the ball keeps dropping like that."

National League leaders Wrexham continue the title challenge against Altrincham on Saturday before facing United in the replay at Bramall Lane next week.

The Reds, who won 4-3 at Coventry City - another Championship side - in the third round, remain in the cup competition and O’Connor refuses to be downbeat.

“It is not all gone,” said O’Connor.

“We have kept the unbeaten record at home which is a good thing.

“We have already beaten a Championship side away from home and if we put in a performance like on Sunday at Bramall Lane, we will definitely give ourselves a chance.”
