PHIL PARKINSON believes a good FA Cup run will strengthen his case when he looks to add to his Wrexham squad.

Saturday’s 4-1 win against Farnborough put the Reds into the third round of the famous competition.

Promotion is the priority but Parkinson feels he has got a big enough squad capable of challenging on both fronts, and the finances generated from the cup run will help fund new signings in the January transfer window.

The Reds’ boss is set to be without midfielder Jordan Davies who was stretchered off at the weekend with a serious knee injury.

“The FA Cup brings in money so if we do need some reinforcements, that helps make the case to the owners and Shaun Harvey,” said Parkinson.

“Obviously we picked up an injury with Jordan Davies so that helps.

“But we have got a squad a lot stronger than last year and I feel we can cope with a cup run.

“Getting to the third round is a huge lift for everybody again and keeps the positive vibe in the town and around the team and the ownership.

“We didn’t manage to do it last year but we have done it this year and we will enjoy it.

“The cup is a bonus; building up to the cup games is quite a nice break mentally for the lads and the staff because there is a different feel to the FA Cup.”

Parkinson feels victory over Farnborough made up for supporters’ disappointment after Wales were beaten 2-0 by Iran in the World Cup on Friday and go into tonight’s final group game against England facing an uphill battle in their quest to make the last 16.

“There is always a buzz about the FA Cup, there is a different feel,” added Parkinson.

“I think we lifted our supporters after Wales’ disappointing result; it was important that we put a smile back on supporters’ faces.”
