PHIL PARKINSON believes extending Paul Mullin's stay at The Racecourse is a "big statement".

The 27-year-old striker joined Wrexham last summer from Cambridge United on a three-year deal and made an immediate impact, scoring 32 goals in all competitions during the 2021/22 campaign.

That earned Mullin the National League player of the season award after becoming the club and division's top goal scorer, helping Wrexham finish runners-up to Stockport before losing against Grimsby Town in the play-off semi-final.

Mullin has committed his future to Wrexham, signing a one-year contract extension with the option of an extra year, which will keep him with the Reds until at least the end of the 2024/25 season, and Parkinson couldn't be happier.

"I said in the summer that when we were searching for the players to make a difference, one of the key things for me was could we keep our best players," said Parkinson.

"There is always going to be interest in players who score goals but Mulls really genuinely loves it here at the club.

"I think it is a big statement that he has signed another contract."

Mullin was in the side as Wrexham kicked off a 15th season in non-league with a 2-1 victory against Eastleigh at The Racecourse on Saturday.

The Reds had to come from behind to secure victory with substitute Elliot Lee - one of six summer signings - scoring both goals following his 63rd minute introduction.

Former Luton Town playmaker Lee got the plaudits and praise from his manager.

"Elliot is a talented player and he gave us a spark when we needed it," said Parkinson.

"He gave us that bit of craft in and around the penalty box, especially against tired legs.

"He was excellent. Not just his two goals but the things he did for us.

"He linked the play and showed in that 25 minutes what he is all about.

"I am pleased for him because as a player making your debut, it is always important to get off to a good start and I don't think he could have done much more.

"We have got to get him up to speed, we have got to get him ready, but he is a match-winner."
