IT came as no surprise to hear that Wrexham’s opening day gate at home to Eastleigh was the best in the National League.

It was Wrexham’s biggest opening day attendance since their days in the old Second Division when 13,036 fans watched a 1-0 win over West Ham United at The Racecourse.

On Saturday, just 103 short of hitting the 10,000 mark, the next best crowd in non-league football’s top division was at title rivals Notts County, who attracted 6,331 for their 3-0 win over Maidenhead United at Meadow Lane.

Southend United, where on-loan Wrexham striker Jake Hyde’s debut lasted only 12 minutes before he picked up an injury, pulled in 5,681 for a game that saw visitors Boreham Wood win 1-0 despite ending up with nine men.

York City - back in the National League - were next best with 3,978 watching their 2-0 win over Woking.

Completing the top five attendances for the big kick-off were Torquay United with 3,690 suffering a drab, goal-less draw against former Premier League outfit, Oldham Athletic.

Scunthorpe, who were relegated alongside The Latics from League Two, also attracted a 3,000-plus crowd - 3,131 saw them beat Yeovil Town - Wrexham’s hosts this Saturday.

The other opening day gates were: Dorking Wanderers (2244); Altrincham (1,714); Aldershot (1,686); Dagenham and Redbridge (1,455); Barnet (1,286); Wealdstone (1,090).
