PHIL PARKINSON welcomed the fact that Wrexham were made to work hard for their opening day win over Eastleigh.

The Reds kicked off a 15th season in non-league with a 2-1 victory against the Spitfires in front of nearly 9,900 supporters at The Racecourse.

Wrexham, favourites for the National League title, had to come from behind to secure three points after the visitors took a 14th minutes lead.

Eastleigh's time-wasting tactics frustrated Wrexham but summer signing Elliot Lee came off the substitutes bench in the second half and the former Luton Town playmaker scored a superb equaliser before firing home the winner with five minutes to go.

It was the perfect start to the season and Parkinson was just pleased to get clinch victory.

"It was important to get three points on the board on the first day," said Parkinson.

"I am glad in a way that the game was the manner it was.

"Obviously with the squad we have got, there was that fear of people getting carried away and thinking every game we are going to beat teams three or four nil.

"It was just a reminder that teams are going to disrupt the game and make it difficult, and they are going to waste time, they are going to feign injury and they are going to walk over the pitch.

"It was a hot, sticky day and the fluency of our passing wasn't quite as crisp as we would have liked it but I just felt that the moments would come for us and it is all about being patient and not trying to force it.

"Elliot has come on and produced two moments of real magic for us."
