REECE HALL-JOHNSON is set to miss the start of the National League campaign due to a thigh injury.

The wing-back was one of a number of players who was absent when Wrexham kicked off their pre-season programme with a 5-2 win at Nantwich Town on Saturday.

Reds' boss Phil Parkinson named a different side for each half at The Weaver Stadium, with youth graduates and two trialists getting 45 minutes alongside senior members of the Wrexham squad.

Goalkeeper Mark Howard was the only one of the three summer signings to get a run-out as Jordan Tunnicliffe and Elliot Lee sat out the contest, and Parkinson gave the lowdown on Hall-Johnson ahead of the Wrexham squad yesterday heading out to the Alicante region on Spain for a training camp.

"Unfortunately Reece got injured at the start of pre-season and he is going to have to have surgery," said Parkinson.

"He has damaged a tendon in his thigh and that is a big blow for us, Reece has come back in good shape."

Attacker Lee, who has joined Wrexham on a three-year deal following his release by Championship outfit Luton Town, could get some game-time when the Reds face Nottingham Forest under-23s in their next friendly this Saturday during the Spanish training camp.

"Elliot is a little bit behind in terms of his preparation, he was at Nantwich doing some work with the lads but he will be involved more in terms of the football when we get to Spain," said Parkinson.

The Reds' boss is keen to add to his squad before Wrexham start a 15th season in non-league with a home game against Eastleigh on Saturday August 6.

"I had a good chat with Shaun Harvey and I will speak to him again about our progress in the recruitment drive," added Parkinson.

"Hopefully we can put a couple of things into action. The squad isn't where we want it to be yet and we’ve got work to do on that."
