DAVID JONES remains committed to helping Wrexham have a successful season by playing his part on the pitch and that means trying to take points off a team that he is convinced will be challenging for the National League title come May.

The 36-year-old midfielder joined the Reds as player-coach ahead of the club's 14th campaign in non-league, putting pen to paper on a one-year deal following a successful trial.

Playing games remains at the forefront of Jones' mind and he is looking forward to Wrexham's eagerly awaited clash against Stockport County, who were installed as title favourites along with the Reds, at Edgeley Park on Saturday.

Although Stockport have had an inconsistent start, Jones expects Simon Rusk's side to come good throughout the course of the season so he is focussed on Wrexham, beaten just once in their opening seven matches, getting a positive result.

"Minds will be on the job," said Jones. "We have got a job to do.

"It's another big game and another three points at stake against a team that before the season started were one of the big names that were going to push for promotion, which I'm sure they will do because they have got a good squad.

"It's another game early on in the season and I'm sure they will be up there at the end of the season so it is an important one for us to try and get a result."

Jones returns to Wrexham having first started out in the club's Centre of Excellence as a nine-year-old, going on to play for the likes of Manchester United, Derby County, Wolves and Burnley.

Having scored a spectacular goal on his debut in the 2-2 draw at Solihull Moors on the opening day, Jones was sent off on his next appearance as a second half substitute against Woking on September 11.

Wrexham held on to win 1-0 and Jones took the dismissal on the chin.

"It could have gone my way but I gave the referee an opportunity to give me two yellow cards so it was disappointing for that to happen," said Jones.

"Luckily it didn't effect the result and you move on.

"We have had another good result since then and I am looking forward to another big game at Stockport."

Wrexham dominated the first half against leaders Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday but the visitors came much more in the game after the break

Jones came off the bench to help Phil Parkinson's men hold onto their slender lead carved out by Paul Mullin's stunning strike.

"It was nice to get some minutes and try and help the team see the game out," said Jones.

"Obviously I have signed for Wrexham to try and make an impact as a player. I know it is a player-coach role but I still feel fit enough and if I can contribute to a successful season.

"It was nice to get back on the pitch, and for the team to get the win."
