BIG things are expected this season at The Racecourse but Dior Angus feels that will spur the players on to do well rather than prove to be a burden.

Wrexham, heading into a 14th campaign in non-league under new manager Phil Parkinson, are one of the title favourites along with big-spending Stockport County.

Expectation levels have risen following the takeover by Hollywood stars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds earlier this year, and prolific striker Paul Mullin - League Two player of the season in 2020-21 after helping Cambridge United clinch promotion - among the new signings with more to come.

But Angus believes Wrexham will thrive on the pressure rather than buckle.

"Hopefully the high expectations will give the boys a push as well," said Angus.

"We have got quite a young group so fearless mode will probably set in and let's just go for it.

"I have played in front of the fans before for the opposition and they get behind their team.

"We have got some really good players as well so I am looking forward to it."

Angus, who won the National League title with Barrow in 2019-20, joined Wrexham from the Bluebirds on January transfer window deadline day.

The 27-year-old scored six times as Wrexham missed out on the play-offs last season but he is targeting more goals next term to help Parkinson's men realise their promotion dream.

"Hopefully so," said Angus.

"The aim is always to score as many goals as possible and alongside that, get promotion out of this league.

"Me scoring goals can help us do that."

Angus is already up and running, with the frontman scoring twice in Saturday's 5-0 win at Tamworth when Reds' supporters saw their side in action for the first time since March 2020.

It might only have been a pre-season friendly but for Angus it is a case of start as you mean to go on.

"It was nice to find the back of the net and it was nice to win as well, albeit a friendly," said Angus.

"Scoring gets you rhythm and momentum ready for the start of the season.

"You want to hit double figures and score as many goals as possible to help the team."

Parkinson is strengthening his squad ahead of the big kick-off, with Wrexham starting their campaign with a home game against Yeovil on Saturday August 21.

Liam McAlinden, Jake Hyde and Mullin has been brought in to add to the attacking options and Angus has welcomed the competition, with Jordan Ponticelli, Jake Bickerstaff and Kwame Thomas - when he returns from a serious Achilles' injury - the other frontmen at Parkinson's disposal.

"Competition for places is good, it keeps you on your toes," said Angus.

"You know you need to put your performances in to stay in the team, it is as simple as that."

The race is on to secure a place in the team against Yeovil and Angus added: "That's the big one and we are just working towards that day now."

Angus saw three of his fellow strikers get on the scoresheet as Wrexham secured a 4-0 victory in yesterday’s friendly at Fleetwood Town.

Mullin broke the deadlock in the fifth minute after Shaun Brisley’s effort from a corner was saved.

Hyde, available after missing Saturday’s win at Tamworth, quickly made it 2-0 and he got the third goal on 37 minutes when he was set-up by Mullin.

Ponticelli completed the scoring in the 70th minute following a pass from substitute Angus.

Parkinson was able to hand a first pre-season outing to Luke Young and Harry Lennon.
