SHAUN BRISLEY is not taking it for granted that he will be guaranteed a place in the Wrexham side and the experienced centre-back is determined to keep proving he should be in the team for the big kick-off.

Reds' boss Phil Parkinson has bolstered his squad by recruiting Brisley and Harry Lennon but is still looking to add to his defensive options ahead of the opening game of the 2021-22 National League campaign against Yeovil at The Racecourse on Saturday August 21.

Brisley has started the opening two pre-season friendlies - the 31-year-old played 90 minutes in Saturday's 5-0 win at Tamworth - and he is eager to keep impressing so he makes it difficult for Parkinson to leave him out when Wrexham get down to business.

"Everyone is out to prove themselves for August 21," said Brisley.

"You want to be in that starting XI to start the season off.

"We are hoping it is going to be a successful season and everyone wants to earn that right to take that shirt for the first game.

"Not just in the games but each day in training, you have got be 100 per cent and show the staff and the manager that you are ready to step up."

Brisley, brought in following his release by Port Vale at the end of last season, is enjoying being at The Racecourse.

"I have bedded in really well," said Brisley.

"I have had a couple of weeks training and played a couple of games, and I am feeling sharper every day.

"We have got more lads coming back to full fitness, they came into the game at Tamworth and everyone played their part."

Brisley was delighted Wrexham kept a clean sheet against Tamworth and found their shooting boots at the other end.

"Our main job as defenders is to keep a clean sheet so I am delighted with that," said Brisley.

"I am delighted with the win.

"I thought we played some really good stuff at times and we got the goals as well which was nice.

"We created chances and we had an end product."

Wrexham supporters saw their side get the better of Tamworth, attending a match for the first time since March 2020, and Brisley admits it made a difference.

"It was nice to have fans back in, said Brisley.

"It puts a little bit more on the game because you want to win the game for them as well as yourselves.

"Having that backing gives you that extra step in your yards."

Wrexham continue their pre-season programme against Fleetwood Town today at the League One club's training base and Brisley is looking forward to another run-out.

"It will be a different test," said Brisley.

"That is pre-season - you get different tests from teams in different leagues.

"You have just got to adapt to that and get your fitness up and try to play well."
