YOU'D think Wrexham would want to produce the X-factor with the club on the verge of being taken over by two Hollywood stars but the Reds served up another woeful performance at Chesterfield.

Dean Keates' side suffered defeat after conceding an 89th minute winner but the Reds never looked like being the team that would get three points with the game evenly poised at the break as they barely had any shots all afternoon following a lacklustre display.

Actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney could be unveiled as new owners at The Racecourse this week and if they saw a live stream of the game, the duo will know that there is a lot of work to be done on the pitch if mis-firing Wrexham are going to challenge for the play-offs.

Wrexham suffered an early setback as Chesterfield took a ninth minute lead.

Reece Hall-Johnson did not get enough on his header back to Rob Lainton from Jak McCourt's cross and Akwasi Asante beat the Reds' goalkeeper with a neat volley.

The Reds were unexpectedly back on level terms after they were awarded a controversial penalty on 20 minutes.

Jordan Davies' shot deflected off McCourt who was adjudged to have handled the ball, although it seemed harsh on the Spireites midfielder, and Luke Young converted his penalty.

Chesterfield had chances in the second half and scored the winner with one minute remaining as Liam Mandeville put Asante through on goal and the former Chester striker slotted past Lainton.

Here's how the players rated:

ROB LAINTON: Beaten twice by Asante but did make a couple of saves to keep Wrexham in it. 5

JAMES HORSFIELD: Chesterfield were on top in the second half and kept the Reds under pressure. 5

FIACRE KELLEHER: Made some vital blocks and was solid against a useful Chesterfield side.6

THEO VASSELL: Wrexham had a lot of defending to do second half in particular but couldn't hold on. 5

REECE HALL-JOHNSON: Made the mistake that gifted Chesterfield an early lead but attacked down the right. 5

JAY HARRIS: Lost possession at times as the Spireites bossed the midfield battles. 4

LUKE YOUNG: Coolly converted his penalty for the second game running and put in a shift. 5

JORDAN DAVIES: Did his best to support attacks down the left on a frustrating afternoon. 5

DAN JARVIS: Wrexham weren’t an attacking threat and he was wasteful in good positions. 4

JORDAN PONTICELLI: Saw a rare Reds attempt at goal blocked in the second half. 4

ADI YUSSUF: Didn’t hold the ball up well enough. 4
