LEO SMITH'S wonder goal won't show in the record books so it would be only fitting if The New Saints midfielder scored in tomorrow's rematch with Bala Town at Maes Tegid.

Smith, who came through the ranks at Wrexham and arrived at Park Hall in the summer following an impressive 2019-20 season with Caernarfon, scored a real Goal of the Season contender when Saints faced Bala on September 30.

The 22-year-old dribbled his way past three Bala players before placing the ball over goalkeeper Alex Ramsay and into the net with a wonderful finish.

The teams were drawing 2-2 when the game was abandoned late-on because of floodlight failure so the fixture will be replayed tomorrow.

Although his wonder goal won't officially count, Smith is just pleased that the television cameras were there to capture it.

"That is definitely the best goal I have scored since I have been playing football," said Smith.

"It was a shame that it doesn't count but the good thing is it was live in front of the cameras which is a positive.

"I know it doesn't count in the record books but I scored it and everyone has seen it."

As for the re-arranged fixture - the only Cymru Premier game being played this weekend because of the coronavirus pandemic - Smith added: "Hopefully I score again.

"That is the aim but the most important thing is trying to get that win and stay unbeaten."

Saints are top of the table after winning eight and drawing one of their nine fixtures to open up a five point lead over Bala and defending champions Connah's Quay Nomads.

Smith has played a key role in steering Saints to the summit and he is enjoying life with Scott Ruscoe's side.

"I had a number of ex-Football League clubs offer me stuff but I felt at this moment in time, TNS was the perfect move for me to get back professional which was my main aim," said Smith.

"Going there, I felt like I could definitely improve them and I feel like I have, and a few people have told me I have which is good.

"The way that they play suits me perfectly and I feel like I have improved all over."

Smith, who made his Wrexham debut in October 2016, did not feature in the Reds' first team during the 2018-19 campaign and went on loan to Caernarfon.

Told he would still be given a new contract by then manager Bryan Hughes, Smith was only offered the chance to prove himself in pre-season and he decided to sign a permanent contract with the Canaries in July 2019.

"I felt like I was treated unfairly with how it ended," added Smith.

"Being told one thing and it ending up being the total opposite was a bit of a shame.

"I still follow Wrexham but being told you are getting a contract and then being told you aren't was disappointing.

"Bryan Hughes wanted me to come back in pre-season but I just felt like I wanted a fresh start."
