'WHY Wrexham?' is a question asked by a lot of people - but Reds legend Dixie McNeil is just embracing the fact that two Hollywood stars could take control of the football club.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds were named last week as the “two extremely well-known individuals of high net worth” interested in taking over the club.

McElhenney, an American actor, director, producer and screenwriter, is best known as the creator of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Reynolds is an award-winning Canadian actor, writer, producer and business entrepreneur whose credits include Marvel’s Deadpool.

As well as the purchase of Wrexham for a nominal sum, the duo also intend to immediately invest £2 million.

McElhenney and Reynolds will put forward their vision for Wrexham and proposal for members to vote on at a Special General Meeting and McNeil, a prolific striker who has managed the club and was appointed to the board of directors in December, is over the moon that the pair have chosen the Reds.

"You are always going to think why Wrexham, you would think they would go for a Football League club or even a club in the Championship," said McNeil.

"To start this low down, I suppose they could make a film out of it if they wanted to.

"It is just a bonus for the club. Anybody else being in the situation we are in, they would be jumping for joy so we will just have to see how it goes, and hopefully it goes through."

McNeil refuses to get carried away until a takeover is completed but he admits it could be the start of a successful era at Wrexham, who are preparing for a 13th season in non-league.

"I'm hoping to get a little role in one of their films now!" joked McNeil.

"I think it is brilliant in the sense that somebody wants to take the club on and put some money into the football club.

"I am pleased for the fans but I am always a bit wary until the deal is actually done, although I'd sooner it is us than Chester!

"But if they do take the club over, I am sure we have got a great chance of shooting up the leagues and ending up who-knows-where.

"The money is there which is what football is all about at this moment in time so it can only do good for the club.

"We have got to look at it as what an opportunity."

McNeil would like to speak to McElhenney and Reynolds and hear their plans for the future - and who better than the 73-year-old to let the duo know what a special club they are acquiring.

"That is one of the things I would like to do before they do take it on, to see what their ideas and plans are for the football club," said McNeil.

"Without being horrible or nasty, the changes that they going to make in the sense of are they going to bring their own personnel in etc.

"And it would be nice to try and help them out in the sense of letting them know what the club is about, and where it has come from.

"Let's just hope that the good times can come back to the football club.

"We have been in this league a long time and you do need money to get out of it.

"If they can provide it and they want to do it, then great."
