JORDAN PONTICELLI has backed himself to score more goals to help Wrexham battle it out at the right end of the National League when the 2020-21 campaign kicks-off.

The 21-year-old striker, who bagged two goals in five league outings whilst on loan with the Reds last term, has signed a two-year deal at The Racecourse after leaving Coventry City.

Happy with his form when the 2019-20 season was suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic, Ponticelli was confident of adding to his tally in the remaining nine games and help Wrexham move away from the relegation zone.

But Ponticelli just wants to pick up where he left off when the new season starts in October.

"Covid-19 took away all the enjoyment for everyone with the games being stopped, especially for me after the two years where I hadn't been playing football," said Ponticelli, who found opportunities limited since his breakthrough season when he helped the Sky Blues clinch promotion from League Two in 2017-18, scoring six goals in 26 appearances.

"To come here and start playing again and enjoying my football, we didn't win every game but we looked a good team when we were playing so it was a bit of a kick in the teeth but it affected everyone.

"It wasn't great that it stopped it but I am back now to try and pick up where we left off, and hopefully carry on."

Ponticelli, who opened his Wrexham account in the 3-2 defeat at Chesterfield on February 8 before scoring in the 2-0 win at Bromley a fortnight later, is confident of weighing in with even more goals in 2020-21.

"It was only three or four games but I thought I did well when I played and obviously the goals came," said Ponticelli.

"If it wasn't for Covid-19, I would have backed myself to grab a few more before the end of the season.

"Now I have got a chance here to push on and grab a lot more goals next season.

"I am very confident in my ability to go out there and score for Wrexham."

Ponticelli would not reveal a goal target but he is eager to be a regular on the scoresheet so that Wrexham swap a relegation fight for a promotion push.

"I am a striker so there is a goal target but I am going to keep that to myself," added Ponticelli.

"But if I reach that target, there is no reason why we shouldn't be involved in the play-off places.

"Everyone knows how big a club Wrexham is and National League is not the league they should be in, especially with the history of the club.

"The aim is to come in and personally do a job, to score as many goals as possible.

"It is a team game and play-offs or a promotion push would be great this season but I would love to contribute to that myself, and hopefully the goals I score can do that."
