HUW GRIFFITHS is relishing the challenge of building on Sean Eardley’s legacy at Caernarfon Town.

Griffiths, pictured, headed to The Oval in January, less than 12 hours after his departure from Cefn Druids was announced, to work alongside Eardley as Caernarfon chased European football.

But after the season was ended abruptly by the coronavirus crisis, Eardley called time on his spell in charge at Caernarfon, who he successfully led into the Cymru Premier, before securing back-to-back top-six finishes.

Griffiths, who has confirmed that Richard Davies will be promoted to assistant manager, is looking forward to the 2020/21 Cymru Premier season - whenever that kicks off.

“I’m looking forward to it,” said Griffiths. “There is excitement about being in the hotseat. When things like this happen you can either rise to the challenge or fall by the wayside and I’ve always been one for a challenge.

“Taking charge of one of the biggest clubs in Welsh football is exciting.”

When time was called on the 2019/20 campaign Caernarfon were chasing a top-four finish and in the semi-finals of the Welsh Cup, where they were set to face Cardiff Met.

The Welsh Cup has been postponed, but the European spot for winning the competition has gone to Barry Town United, who finished fourth on a points-per-game basis.

It’s a decision that’s tough for Caernarfon and Griffiths to swallow, the former Chester City assistant saying: “I genuinely believe we’d have qualified for Europe this year.

“We had two chances with the play-offs and the Welsh Cup, so that was hugely disappointing.”

Griffiths also took time to praise Eardley, who will be looking to guide Llandudno to Cymru North promotion next term after he was confirmed as the new boss of his hometown club.

“I’m gutted to lose Sean,” said Griffiths, who will ditch his famous suit for a more relaxed touchline appearance. He struck a chord with the players, fans and staff here and it’s obvious that he will be sorely missed by everyone.

“We got on great, we passed on a few bits to each other and the friendship will remain. If there is a pre-season then it would be great to see Caernarfon versus Llandudno.

“Football moves on, but Sean will be missed.”

Griffiths’ former club, Druids, have agreed a new one-year deal with Aaron Simpson.

The versatile Simpson said: “I’m very happy at the club and delighted to stay” said the defensive midfielder.”

Druids’ chairman Des Williams added: “Aaron fits the new playing philosophy and I’m delighted he’s agreed to stay another year.”

The New Saints, meanwhile, have confirmed the signing of Louis Robles, who recently left Bala Town.

Robles said: “I’m very happy to join The New Saints. After speaking with Scott (Ruscoe) on several occasions, I knew it was the right move for me, and I want to thank him for the confidence shown in me. Really looking forward to getting started.”

Saints have also confirmed that Blaine Hudson, Simon Spender, Connor Roberts, Danny Redmond, Ben Clark, Jon Routledge, Jamie Mullan and Dean Ebbe have signed new deals to remain at Park Hall next season.
