DIXIE McNEIL fears for the future of lower league clubs as the coronavirus crisis continues to hit hard.

Wrexham Football Club placed all its employees on furlough leave earlier this month claiming it was a decision they had to make to safeguard their future.

"It was the right decision, the only decision to make," said Reds legend McNeil, who played for and managed the Reds and is now on the club's board of directors.

"Clubs must safeguard their future and with no money coming in at a time when crowds are normally up, it's so hard for clubs at this level.

"I really fear for the future of some clubs at this level and that when one goes, others will quickly."

The National League officially called off the season last week but discussions are still taking place to sort out promotion and relegation issues and whether there will be end of season play-offs.

The League has written to clubs again on the matter and expect to make a decision on whether play-offs may still take place.

Barrow ended the season on top and could well be promoted to League Two - something that Bluebirds boss Ian Evatt thinks should happen.

"Anything other than us being promoted would be being harsh," said Evatt. "We've proven we were the best team over a long period of time."
