NO-ONE is happier than Rhiannon Roberts that women’s international football is returning to Wrexham tonight.

Jayne Ludlow’s Wales play their first match at The Racecourse Ground since 2012 when they face Estonia in a friendly.

Liverpool star Roberts was born in Chester but was brought up supporting Wrexham and she can’t wait to play at the stadium.

“I am absolutely buzzing,” said defender/midfielder Roberts. “As soon as it got announced, I was like ‘yes, finally something up north’.

“I have been to Colliers Park, which is a great set-up and we should be utilising, to do coaching, and it is great to play a game in Wrexham.

“I will be super-excited to be on the pitch. I remember standing on the Kop watching a lot of games with my brother, and he still goes quite a lot.”

Roberts, who was with Blackburn Rovers and Doncaster Rovers Belles before signing for Liverpool in 2018, qualifies to play for Wales through grandparents and the 29-year-old admits she is “annoyed” that she was born on the other side of the border.

“I was meant to be born in Wales but I was early so I had to go over the border to Chester which is really annoying, I am not going to lie,” said Roberts.

“I was only in Wales for a few months and then we moved to Blackburn so I was pretty much brought up in Lancashire. But me and my brother always came back to support Wrexham.

“My uncle and my gran are from Buckley, my dad is in Ruthin, my other nan is in Saltney and my brother lives in Chester so it is really nice being around where I am used to. I really like it around here and I would definitely move back to north Wales.”

The Estonia friendly is being used as preparation for two crunch UEFA Women’s EURO 2021 qualification home matches against the Faroe Islands and Norway in April, with Wales currently second in the group.

“It will be a good test,” said Roberts. “We have got up-coming games that we need to prep for and get maximum points, and I think it is the right team to play against.”

Ludlow feels the Estonia friendly will provide a good test ahead of the crucial double-header.

“We will be coming up against an organised side,” said Ludlow. “That sort of challenge will be very important to us as we prepare for the remaining games in this campaign.

“For us, there’s a lot of work we need to do to prepare us for those last qualifying games, and this type of camp allows us to mix things up.”

Ludlow has named a mix of youth and experience in her 24-player squad.

Key winger Natasha Harding returns after missing the goalless draw against Northern Ireland in November with a knee problem but Ludlow is without Jess Fishlock who remains in America to continue her rehabilitation from a long-term injury.

Gemma Evans and the versatile Elise Hughes - born in Hawarden and currently on loan at Bristol City from Everton - are also sidelined through injury.
