JUNIOR players may have to face making a difficult decision next season if a new ‘one player, one club’ rule is introduced in the Wrexham Junior League.

That would mean that anyone who plays league football and is also on an academy scheme at another club would have to make a choice.

League Chairman Phil Jones said: “There continues to be much talk about the one player, one club registration but at this stage, all I can say is it still remains as speculation but there is no smoke without fire.

“Almost 2,500 youngsters are registered to play in the Wrexham and District Junior League.

The exact number of those who currently are registered to play in academies such as TNS, Cefn Druids, Airbus and Connah’s Quay is not exactly known but thought to be a considerable number.

“It seems that those who are currently registered with a league club and an academy will have to do some soul-searching and make the choice of where they want to play.

“It could be argued that if two or three players opted to play for an academy side, it could provide an opportunity for new players to get a regular chance of playing youth league football.

“There also becomes an added complication whereby some managers manage at club level and academy level so they too could have to make a choice and if they do opt to stick with an academy club.

“It puts the onus on junior league clubs to find a new manager with all of the required credentials to manage a team. It is the league’s priority to assess the implications and respond in a positive fashion.”

The Wrexham League Cup Finals Day will be back at The Racecourse Ground this season.

The Rock at Cefn Druids staged last season’s finals but youngsters will return to The Racecourse on Sunday May 10.
