JORDAN PONTICELLI has joined Wrexham to score the goals that can give his career a boost and help the Reds stave off the threat of relegation.

The striker has been brought in on loan until the end of the season from Coventry City and is set to make his debut in Saturday's clash against Harrogate Town at Wetherby Road.

Since his breakthrough season when he helped the Sky Blues clinch promotion from League Two in 2017-18, scoring six goals in 26 appearances, Ponticelli has found opportunities limited at the club.

The 21-year-old, restricted to few chances during loan spells with Macclesfield and Tranmere, is looking forward to getting game-time with Wrexham and contributing with goals.

"I am at a stage now where I need to be playing," said Ponticelli. "I feel I am good enough to be playing wherever I am.

"Hopefully I get the chance here and score a few goals.

"Any striker, if you are getting minutes on the pitch you are going to have chances and I always back myself to finish them.

"I am hoping that a few come to me early on and push on from there."

Ponticelli still has ambitions of establishing himself at Coventry and being a part of manager Mark Robins' long-term plans.

"I made a few appearances in League One with Coventry but a lot more in League Two when we had the promotion season," said Ponticelli.

"It was a great breakthrough season for me, my first professional season, and it came with a few nice goals as well.

"Hopefully that can continue at Wrexham.

"I have still got more than enough time at Coventry to get to my end goal which is, as a Coventry boy, to be playing for Coventry.

"It might not be now but this loan move can help me get to that stage."

Ponticelli had no qualms with making the switch to Wrexham who are 18th in the National League, just two points above the drop zone with 15 games remaining.

"I didn't need much convincing. Wrexham is a very big club and to get the opportunity to come here, there was no way I was going to say no," said Ponticelli.

"First impressions are very good, and seeing the ground for the first time and the lads, it is very nice to be here.

"I have got a job to do so I am going to come in and give my all.

"This club doesn't deserve to be in the National League let alone the bottom half of it, so I am going to try and have a good end to the season to get the club up as far as I can."

Ponticelli revealed that Reds boss Dean Keates tried to sign him when he was manager of Walsall.

"The gaffer tried to get me when he was at Walsall so he saw me at a young age when I broke through at Coventry," said Ponticelli.

"He knows what I am capable of, I know what I am capable of, so I am hoping that I can bring that here."

Harrogate, who play on an artificial pitch, are second in the table but Ponticelli wants to help his team-mates build on Saturday's 3-0 home win over Woking.

"I haven't played on 4G for a while so that will be fairly new," added Ponticelli.

"The lads had a very good result at the weekend and football is all about who turns up on the day.

"Harrogate are doing okay but hopefully we can do better."
