STEVE HALLIWELL wants to see Gresford Athletic “turn the screw” when they’ve got their opponents on the ropes.

Gresford made it four points in the space of four days as they followed up Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Ruthin with a 2-0 success against Llanfair at The New Saints’ Park Hall on Wednesday.

Jordan MacCarter opened the scoring 10 minutes before the break, but it wasn’t until the dying moments that Aaron Edwards made absolutely sure of the points for Gresford.

And Halliwell wants to feel a bit more comfortable watching from the sidelines - starting at Penrhyncoch tomorrow afternoon.

“I would like us to be a bit more clinical,” said director of football Halliwell. “I want us to turn the screw on teams. When we go 1-0 up I don’t want us to sit back, I want us to go and attack the opposition again and again.”

But Halliwell was pleased overall as Gresford continued their quest to finish September unbeaten with all three points against Llanfair, the win moving the Wrexham-based side up to 10th in the table.

“I can’t complain about a 2-0 win,” said Halliwell. “We scored two, kept a clean sheet and kept 11 men on the pitch, so it was a pleasing night’s work.

“Llanfair were pretty much what we expected them to be and the game was a bit scrappy, but we definitely deserved to win.

“At one point I was concerned it was going to be another case of us getting caught out after not taking our chances, but we managed to take two in the end.”

Hosting Llanfair on a big and wide Park Hall will be different to visiting Penrhyncoch’s Cae Baker, but Halliwell is relishing the challenge.

“It’s not the biggest pitch and we never, ever seem to have an easy game there,” said Halliwell. “In fact, I don’t think I’ve won there as a manager or director of football before, so I know how tough it is.”

The trip will be Gresford’s seventh successive league match away from Clappers Lane. Wednesday’s ‘home’ game was switched to Park Hall, while the previous five have all been scheduled away with cricket taking precedent.

“It has definitely affected us,” said Halliwell. “But it will benefit us later in the season. We’ve got eight in 10 at home from November to January.”

Joe Davies and Ashton Williams return from suspension for Gresford, who remain without trio Paul Williams, Harley Steele and Jack Chaloner.

Llanfair’s next fixture is a home clash with Rhyl, managed by former Gresford boss Eddie Maurice-Jones, while Conwy Borough make the trip to Llanrhaeadr and Ruthin Town play host to Colwyn Bay.
