STEVE HALLIWELL is targeting a top-six finish for Gresford Athletic this season.

Halliwell’s men were forced to settle for 10th place last term, but after an impressive pre-season and a Cymru Premier League Cup victory over expected title challengers Colwyn Bay, the mood at Clappers Lane is a positive one.

“We are more than ready for the season,” declared Halliwell. “We are a small club at this level and we don’t get much attention, which is fine, because we can just get on with our business.

“The aim is to be in the top-six this season, although staying in the division is the first priority.

“Everyone beats everyone in this league and if you can pick up some decent results and cause a few shocks on the way, you can be up at the top end of the table.”

After starting the season with cup matches against Colwyn Bay and Bala Town, Gresford face a trip to second-tier new boys Llangefni Town tomorrow.

Llangefni won 11 of their 14 home games last term, and Halliwell knows his side will have to be at their best to come away with all three points.

“They are a bit of an unknown quantity,” said Halliwell. “There has been some talk of things not being quite right there with them struggling for players during pre-season, but we will wait and see what team they put out.

“They won the league last year, so they’ve got quality in their squad and there are no easy games when you go to Anglesey.”

Josh Griffiths (pictured, dead leg) and Jack Jones (hip) are likely to miss the trip for Gresford, who are “in the market” for a midfielder.
