SPRINTER Amy Odunaiya just missed out on a podium place at the British Indoor Championships in Birmingham.

After achieving a new 200m PB of 24.20 seconds in qualifying, Wrexham AC club member Odunaiya (pictured right) then clocked 24.47 seconds in the final to finish in fourth place.

Tamworth athlete Hayley Mills (23.59 seconds) took the race title, with race rivals Kiah Dubarry-Gay (24.01 seconds) and Melissa Roberts (24.28 seconds) each clocking season best times in second and third respectively.

Thomas Walley maintained his impressive form as he recorded a new 60m PB of 7.70 seconds before the Wrexham athlete took the senior men’s long jump title.

Walley leapt a best distance of 6.54 metres to see off the challenge of Southport’s Benjamin Apps (6.31 metres) and West Cheshire’s Geoff Ward (6.07 metres) in second and third respectively.

Amanda Cook was another strong performer for Wrexham as she clocked 8.78 seconds in her 60m race, before achieving 4.49 metres in the long jump.

Laura Turley represented West Cheshire and clocked a new personal best of 54.67 seconds in her qualifying heat.

Luke Northall was Wrexham’s fastest finisher at the Nick Beer 10k in Llandudno, where a time of 36:08 earned him fifth place outright. Club-mate Andrew Jones (40:08) also ran strongly to finish in 23rd place.

West Cheshire’s Rosemary Rogers was first over-65 lady in Llandudno while club-mate Sophie Grainger achieved a podium place in the Manchester Area Cross Country League Series.

She secured third spot overall in the under 15 girls competition after posting fourth position at the final fixture on Saturday in Wythenshawe.

Teenager Harvey Davis was the club’s fastest finisher at the latest Erddig ParkRun, clocking 20:55 to place third at the 5k time trial.

Buckley Runners man David Jones (22:16) was also among the top 20 fastest, with the Wrexham quartet of Callum McGrath (24:54), Ella Davis (25:14), Nick Venables (25:49) and Osian Jones (26:44) finishing further down the rankings.

Deeside’s Stephen Jolly (22:12) was third fastest at the most recent Wepre ParkRun, finishing just ahead of clubmate Stephen Parry (22:42).

Mike Robbins (23:29) was the fastest Wrexham runner at the Flintshire event, with Buckley Runners duo Hayley Evans (23:38) and Kevin Challinor (25:25) also attaining top 20 finishes.

Sunday hosts the weekend’s main race action with North East Wales athletes in action at the Sale Harriers Indoor Open at Sport City.

The Village Bakery Half Marathon gets underway at 11am in Wrexham.
