An impressive turnout from Buckley Runners saw 16 of their membership turn out for ‘The Druid’ Clwydian Summer Fell Race.

The 4.5 mile race starts and finishes at the Druid pub in Llanferres and features around 1,100ft of ascent and heads up Foel Fenlli.

From a 115-strong field, Simon Edwards came home first for Buckley and sixth place overall in a time of 37:26, followed by Steve Toogood (37:48) in seventh and Andy Pritchard (39:29) in 11th.

Hayley Evans (40:57) finished strongly and was the fastest female finisher, while John Morris (50.46) was first in the V70 class.

Dan Mitchell represented West Cheshire and finished fourth with a time of 36 minutes 50 seconds.

The event was won Rosendale Harriers runner Stephen Corbishley in a superb time of (34:43), while Heslby’s Adan Gordon (36:05) took second.

Elsewhere, Buckley’s Jez Brown and Steve Bellis were among the 560-plus runners competing at this year’s Snowdon Mountain Race

The gruelling 10-mile race from Llanberis to the summit and back includes a massive 3,200ft of ascent to challenge even the most experienced competitors.

Brown came home 38th overall and second in the Male 45 Vet category with a very respectable time  01:18:46 , while Bellis clocked 01:44:35 to finish as the fourth fastest entrant in the Male Vet 60 category.

Wrexham AC’s Mark Byrne (01:39:19) was his club’s fastest finisher, followed by Paul Samuels (01:46:01) and Rob Barber (01:47:28).

Italian runner Davie Magnini took the race honours in a time of 01:06:43 followed by England’s Chris Farrell (1:07:48) and compatriot Tom Adams (1:09:16) in third.

Wrexham triathlete Matthew Willis turned in a fine performance to finish second in the European Youth Championships Festival in Lithuania.

Willis’ cumulative time of 24:52 across the swim, bike and run disciplines was bettered only by fellow Great Britain racer Daniel Slater, who finished just six seconds ahead. 

Owen Smith helped himself to two gold medals as he competed for Cardiff AAC at the Brithsh Athletics League Division One match in Bedford.

Former Deeside ace Smith took first in the 400m courtesy of a time of 48.17 seconds, before he ran the anchor leg as his team won the 4x400m relay.

Flintshire’s Smith will be back in action in Bedford on July 29/30 as he competes in the England Athletics AAA & UK CAU Senior Championships.
