ROB OGLEBY scored in a second successive friendly as Wrexham ran out 3-1 winners against Scottish Premier League side Kilmarnock in an entertaining match at The Racecourse last night.

Wrexham made it two wins from two matches at the start of their pre-season programme as they produced an impressive performance to overcome the visitors.

Kilmarnock, the current Scottish League Cup holders, were always going to be a tougher test than Aberystwyth Town but a confident-looking Wrexham were a real threat in the final third and caused their opponents plenty of problems.

Wrexham built up a 3-1 lead thanks to some excellent attacking play and although Kilmarnock rallied late-on, were unable to reduce the deficit.

Boss Andy Morrell used 22 players in total and it was another useful run-out for his first team squad who continue the build-up to the new campaign at Vauxhall Motors on Saturday.

New signing Martin Riley, who signed a one-year deal on Monday after leaving Conference rivals Mansfield Town, started the first half in the heart of the Reds' defence.

There was also a place from the off for experienced striker Brett Ormerod, also making his first appearance at The Racecourse since joining Wrexham earlier in the month.

Trialist midfielder Simon Hackney - presumably injured - was missing at kick-off despite warming up with the rest of the team.

It was Kilmarnock who made the brighter start and a fourth minute corner taken by Alex Pursehouse was headed narrowly wide by Manuel Pascali.

Wrexham began to make in-roads and Dean Keates' long ball almost presented Danny Wright with an opportunity but the striker was quickly closed down by goalkeeper Kyle Letheren.

Morrell was forced into a change in the 18th minute when Jay Harris, who took a knock to an ankle, was replaced by Jamie Morton but it failed to affect Wrexham.

And they took the lead after 23 minutes with their first goalscoring chance of the game.

Nick Rushton advanced into the area and saw his low drive partially blocked by defender Michael Nelson but Wright slotted the loose ball past Letheren.

Buoyed by the goal, Wrexham continued to press and Wright's powerful shot was well blocked by Letheren who then spilled Keates 20-yard free-kick but although Declan Walker was on hand to score, the goal was disallowed for a foul on the keeper.

Kilmarnock were back on level terms on 35 minutes when William Gros' pull-back from the by-line somehow reached Gary Harkins who scored from close range.

Back came Wrexham and Wright's glancing header from Keates' corner fell wide of the post while Morrell then made eight changes for the start of the second half with just Chris Westwood, Neil Ashton and Rushton the only players reappearing.

Wrexham were back in the lead in the 54th minute as Ogleby ran on to Joe Clarke's through ball and did well to fire past Letheren.

Trialist goalkeeper Andy Coughlin, who has been offered a one-year deal by Morrell, was called in to action when Rory Boulding was put clear but he was unable to loft the ball over the former Tranmere Rovers man’s tall frame.

The substitutions continued to flow from both teams, with Wrexham using all their available players by the 56th minute, and the Reds continued to get into some excellent positions.

And although Wrexham were given a let-off when Mark Creighton's attempted clearance struck his own bar, the Reds made it 3-1 on 75 minutes.

Adrian Cieslewicz was brought down in the area and Glen Little confidently scored from the spot.

Kilmarnock substitute Danny Raachi, who was at Wrexham on non-contract terms two years ago, struck the bar in the closing minutes and was also denied by Coughlin, but there was no way back for the Scottish side.
