The health board has confirmed when the revolving doors at Wrexham Maelor Hospital will finally be fixed.

It has now been more than three years since a crash caused significant damage to the doors.

In December 2023, a car crashed into the main entrance of the hospital through the revolving doors, causing huge damage, and the doors have been blocked off ever since.

In December 2024, a planning application went in to Wrexham Council to demolish the doors and replace them with a new sliding door, which would be made of aluminium, and will include an aluminium double-glazed curtain wall and a single plywood roof, with "aluminium rain water goods."

That planning application was approved in February 2025, but work has not progressed on the site since.

Fflint Wrecsam MS Nigel Williams recently met with Betsi Cadwaladr representatives who told him that delays were described as being 'largely insurance related'.

Mr Williams said: "On the damaged front door at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, we were told during my recent visit that repairs and replacement are expected to start ‘early next year.’

"The delay was described as largely insurance-related, rather than being caused by the health board. I have not seen the supporting details, so I will be asking further questions about the timetable."

The Leader this week asked the health board for a timeline for when the door could be back up and running.

They have confirmed that they are expected to re-open by February of next year.

Arwel Hughes, Head of Operational Estates at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, said: “Firstly, we would like to thank patients, visitors and staff at Wrexham Maelor Hospital for their patience while this issue was being resolved. It took far longer than we would have liked.

“I am pleased to be able to say an order has been raised with a supplier for a custom-made replacement door. Installation work is due to commence in January. This means the new entrance should be fully operational by the end of February.”
