North Wales Police has referred itself to the independent police complaints body after a car crashed into a building following a police chase into Shropshire.

A man was left in hospital after the crash through the front of a house in Chirk Bank, close to the county border with Wrexham, on Saturday evening (October 31).

The crash, which took place just before 10pm, saw the driver try to evade police by driving over a bridge which had been closed off for road works.

The car then hit a pile of rubble on the bridge, and flipped to become airborne. It then glanced the bonnet of a parked car and smashed through the wall of a nearby house.

A spokesman for North Wales Police said it had self-referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IPOC). Despite taking place in Shropshire, the incident was close to the border and North Wales Police has made the referral.

The spokesman said said: "Following this incident, North Wales Police has made a voluntary referral to the IOPC for its consideration."

The crash also saw debris being fired at high speed into the houses opposite the bridge with a car being severely damaged.

A neighbour said officers immediately attended the scene where a man was arrested.

She said: “At first we heard this metallic crash and then another crash.

“I was in bed so when I looked out of the window I just saw the blue lights and policemen running down the hill.”

Following this incident, North Wales Police confirmed it has made “a voluntary referral to the IOPC for its consideration”.

The force confirmed that the crash occurred after officers pursued the vehicle following a “failure to stop”.

A spokesperson for North Wales Police said: “At 9.54pm on Saturday, 31 October, a vehicle collided into a property on Canal View, Chirk Bank, Wrexham.

“The driver had been in short pursuit with a police vehicle after failing to stop for officers.

“Following the pursuit, the driver entered a road closure and collided with a bridge, before hitting the front of a residential property.

“The driver was arrested before being taken to hospital where they continue to receive treatment for an injury.

“No injuries were reported from inside the property.”
