A Wrexham man who turned his own feelings of being overwhelmed by Christmas into a magical festive experience for nursery children has won a national award for his kindness.

Community champion Marc Schutzmann has won a national award in the Local Communities category at the Dimensions Leaders’ Awards for creating a free Christmas grotto for nursery children in Wrexham.

The awards, organised by Dimensions, a UK not-for-profit supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic people, honour individuals making a positive impact in society.

After winning his award, Mr Schutzmann said: "It has made me so happy.

"I wanted to tell everyone straight away as I am proud that I have won.

"I can’t wait for this year’s grotto."

He raised more than £300 through a swimming challenge to fund the grotto, which he has now run for two years.

The funds went towards decorations, lights, and gifts, transforming an ordinary space into a festive wonderland filled with twinkling lights and holiday magic.

Local nurseries were invited to visit.

One nursery said: "We cannot praise everyone enough, especially Marc who makes the children feel welcome and at ease.

"He is always smiling and chatty and makes an effort with all the children, going above and beyond to make it a special experience for us all.

"A huge thank you for letting us share these experiences with the children.

"I’m sure these memories will stay with them."

Mr Schutzmann always loved Christmas but found the build-up overwhelming so he decided to turn those feelings into something positive, building a grotto to share the magic of Christmas with children in his community.

His efforts have now been recognised on a national stage, with the award celebrating the practical and heartfelt difference he has made in Wrexham.

The Dimensions Leaders’ Awards are nominated, judged, and presented by adults with learning disabilities and autistic people, and highlight achievements in leadership, advocacy, and community action.

Entries are now open for the next Leaders’ Awards, which celebrate individuals and groups making a positive difference in their communities through achievement, leadership, advocacy, and community action.
