A MAN from Prestatyn is asking for donations after surgeons were unable to complete emergency surgery on him.

Joseph Flavell, 46, developed severe abdominal pain without warning and was blue-lighted into critical care, where scans revealed a sudden, serious perforation in his digestive system.

The perforation was larger than initially expected, and surgeons could not complete everything they had hoped to do before he was transferred from Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

Mr Flavell, a keen mountain climber and gym-goer, is now stable and has been moved to a ward, but faces a recovery expected to take about eight weeks.

A GoFundMe page has been set up, with the aim of easing the financial pressure of his extended time off work and the costs of a prolonged hospital stay - www.gofundme.com/f/help-joseph-flavell-recovery-after-emergency-surgery.

Mr Flavell said he is “grateful for every donation, no matter how big or small”.

He added: “I’m doing OK; I’m still very uncomfortable, but I cannot thank the nursing team enough.

“The care, skill and compassion of the NHS teams at both Glan Clwyd and The Royal have been incredible, and I am so grateful. They have saved my life.

“It's been a traumatic few days, and I know I have a long road to recovery.

“Every contribution will make a genuine difference and help me focus on the one thing that matters most right now - getting well and, hopefully, getting back to the mountains and the gym.”

Roughly £600 has so far been raised, with a target of £2,800 having been set.
