The Cupra Born has always been one of the more interesting electric family hatchbacks, taking the Volkswagen ID.3’s sensible underpinnings and adding a dose of attitude.
For 2026, Cupra has given it a careful refresh rather than a wholesale redesign, and the result is a car that remains distinctive, youthful and genuinely enjoyable to drive.
This is the flagship Born VZ, which means a substantial 79kWh battery, rear-wheel drive and 326PS.
It is quick off the mark, covering 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds, and the instant surge of electric torque makes it feel even more urgent in everyday driving. Pulling away from junctions or joining faster roads requires very little effort; push the accelerator and the Born gets on with the job briskly and quietly.
The Cupra Born has a funky and stylish look
The VZ is not merely a more powerful version of the standard Born, either. Cupra has worked to give its electric hatch a sportier personality than the closely related ID.3. The suspension sits lower, Dynamic Chassis Control is standard and the steering has a sharper, more direct feel. It handles nicely, staying composed through bends and feeling planted, without becoming too uncomfortable over rougher surfaces.
Its rear-wheel-drive layout also helps the Born feel more balanced and involving than many front-driven electric rivals. There is little drama unless you actively go looking for it, but that is a good thing in a family hatchback. The VZ has enough performance to be entertaining when the road opens up, yet it remains easy-going and refined when you simply want to cover distance.
Cupra has continued to give the Born an appearance that stands apart from the usual electric-car template. It looks funky rather than futuristic for the sake of it, with an assertive shark-nose front end, redesigned bumpers, triangular Matrix LED headlights and an illuminated Cupra badge at the rear. Timanfaya Grey suits the car’s angular lines particularly well, while copper detailing provides an extra flourish. It is still recognisably a Born, but the update ensures it does not look dated alongside newer rivals.

The cabin is another of its stronger points. It is stylish and more interesting than the Volkswagen’s, thanks to copper accents, sculpted seats and a more driver-focused look. The Enceladus Grey Dinamica upholstery in this test car helps the interior feel suitably special, while the VZ’s sports seats reinforce its performance positioning.
The refresh has also improved the technology. A new Android-based infotainment system is intended to be faster and easier to use, while the 10.25-inch digital driver display gives clearer information behind the steering wheel. Cupra has also listened to criticism of earlier Volkswagen Group touch controls: the temperature sliders below the central screen are now illuminated, and the redesigned steering wheel uses proper physical buttons.
There are still compromises. The central touchscreen remains responsible for a lot of functions and some operations require more presses than they should. It is also worth noting that the 385-litre boot is merely adequate rather than exceptional.
The car’s different drive modes are one of its best features. Range mode gives you a more relaxed setup when you want to make every mile count, while Comfort suits ordinary commuting. At the other end of the scale, Performance and Cupra modes sharpen the car’s responses. Individual mode allows drivers to tailor elements of the experience to their own taste.

One-pedal driving has also been added, allowing drivers to manage both acceleration and much of the deceleration through the accelerator pedal. This can make town driving smoother and less tiring while helping recover energy through regenerative braking. Drivers who prefer more involvement can also use steering-wheel paddles to alter the level of regeneration.
The 79kWh battery gives the Born VZ a claimed range of up to 389 miles. When charging is required, the battery can accept DC rapid charging at up to 183kW, allowing a 10-80% charge in around half an hour.
