A FATHER and son from Wrexham who were caught with nearly 2.5 kilos of cannabis have been spared jail.
Joseph Davies and Kathan Davies, both of Fourth Avenue in Gwersyllt, appeared before Mold Crown Court today (Thursday, September 10).
Both had previously admitted being in possession with intent to supply cannabis.
James Coutts, prosecuting, said on the morning of April 16, 2024, police officers raided the defendants’ home address.
The court heard that officers found Kathan Davies holding a large bag which he was trying to force out of the window. Police took hold of the bag, and found it contained cannabis.
A search of the property uncovered cannabis totalling 2288 grams (2.3 kilos), just under £1,500 in cash and weighing scales.
A drugs expert valued the cannabis found in the house between £23,000 and £36,000 if sold on the streets.
Joseph Davies’ phone was examined and was found to contain two messages from people seeking to buy cannabis. The court heard Kathan Davies refused to surrender the pin to access his phone.
The court heard that Joseph Davies, aged 50, had eight previous convictions for 30 offences – but most were committed when he was a younger man.
Kathan Davies had no previous convictions.
Nicholas Williams, defending Joseph Davies, said the defendant has long-standing mental health issues, including anxiety and depression. He also wants help to deal with long-term cannabis use.
Mr Williams added that the length of time between the offence being committed and it coming to court has been “hanging over” the defendant’s head.
Ember-Jade Wong, defending Kathan Davies, said the defendant was still a youth when the offence occurred.
She said the pre-sentence report states Kathan Davies is capable of rehabilitation and is of a low risk of re-offending. She added that he expresses remorse and is also keen to reduce his cannabis use.

Judge Simon Mills sentenced Kathan Davies to a 12-month community order. He must complete 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days, 119 (seven days) of unpaid work and will be subject to a GPS trail monitoring tag for a year.
The judge told Joseph Davies that it was “a mark of shame” that he sat next to his son in the dock.
He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment – which was suspended for two years.
He must complete 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days, 140 hours of unpaid work and will also be subject to a GPS trail monitoring tag for a year.
