RESIDENTS in Gwersyllt have been encouraged to sign up for a free reusable cup as part of an environmental project.
The scheme is being run by Gwersyllt Community Council thanks to the support of grant funding.
It aims to cut down plastic use by allowing residents to receive a re-useable cup; which also brings other benefits as some local businesses are supporting the scheme by offering a discount for users.
Gwersyllt Community Councillor Aled Canter explained: "We had a meeting in February and applied for the grant, which we got.
"I then put forward the idea to do re-useable cups and it got great support.
"We had about 50 cups made as a trial and they went straight away.
"Now we have a waiting list for more!
"People have loved the idea and have been really supportive.
"It's really nice to see the project going successfully and to build community engagement.

"Other councils have reached out to ask how we did it.
"This is going to cut down on the use of plastic and support local businesses."
Cllr Canter said while the initial stock of cups has been depleted, he hopes the council will soon have more available and has encouraged residents who are interested to put their name on the waiting list.
