The UK will enjoy new four-day weekends in 2027 and 2028 due to bank holiday changes.
2026 has seen bank holidays follow the usual pattern, with Good Friday on April 3, early May on May 4, and the Spring bank holiday on May 25.
Boxing Day in 2026 falls on a Saturday, so the substitute bank holiday will be observed on Monday, December 28.
But there will be a big change to bank holidays in 2027 and 2028, resulting in a new four-day weekend.
UK to get new four-day bank holidays in 2027 and 2028
Thanks to the way the calendar falls, the festive period in 2027 will bring an extra two days off for many workers.
Christmas Day falls on Saturday, December 25, with Boxing Day landing on Sunday, December 26.
Because both bank holidays fall at the weekend, substitute days will be introduced.
The Government has confirmed those substitute bank holidays will take place on December 27 and December 28 respectively.
That gives the UK a four-day weekend to round off 2027.
The celebrations do not stop there, as the first week of 2028 will also include a three-day weekend with New Year's Day falling on a Saturday.
Monday, January 3, 2028, has now been confirmed as the substitute bank holiday.
No extra bank holiday dates have yet been confirmed by the Government.

- Friday, January 1 - New Year's Day
- Friday, March 26 - Good Friday
- Monday, March 29 - Easter Monday
- Monday, May 3 - Early May bank holiday
- Monday, May 31 - Spring bank holiday
- Monday, August 30 - Summer bank holiday
- Monday, December 27 - Christmas Day (substitute day)
- Tuesday, December 28 - Boxing Day (substitute day)
The Government has not confirmed any extra bank holiday dates.
