SAM SMITH scored the only goal as Wrexham beat Premier League giants Manchester United 1-0 in a pre-season friendly at Helsinki's iconic Olympic Stadium.
On the back of a goalless draw against Polish outfit Wisła Kraków at the Synerise Arena last weekend, Phil Parkinson's side continued their build-up to the new Championship campaign with victory in Finland.
Although some of his senior players have not yet returned for pre-season, United boss Michael Carrick named a strong side for the first half with Harry Maguire, Mason Mount, Joshua Zirkzee, Patrick Dorgu, Leny Yoro, new signing Andrey Santos, Bryan Mbeumo and Luke Shaw among the starters.
United went close to taking the lead when Mason Mount's corner was headed against his own crossbar by Smith, who was under pressure from Yoro.
But Wrexham, still without a few players of their own after reporting back for pre-season nearly three weeks ago, went ahead in the 39th minute following a well worked goal.
George Thomason fed Lewis O'Brien whose low ball across goal was turned in at the back post by Smith.
Parkinson made 10 changes for the start of the second half and Davis Keillor-Dunn was put through on goal by Ollie Rathbone but he was denied by keeper Radek Vitek.
It was a more youthful United side after Carrick named a different side for the second period and Ethan Wheatley was denied by Danny Ward.
United were on top but they were unable to break down Wrexham who triumphed.
